November 2015 Farm Specials

We are now putting people on a waiting list for turkeys and turkey breasts.  There is just a few that are not spoken for.  Turkeys will be processed in 2.5 weeks and available for pickup or delivery as fresh turkeys beginning on the 21st.  We are also taking orders for Apple Wood Hams for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Let us know if you want to reserve one.  

The pastures aren't nearly as pretty as they were even a month ago.  It has frosted and we are working hard to get all the winter grazing planted.  Haying season is over.  Daylight Savings Time is over and it is getting colder.  The laying hens will be moving to their winter barns soon.  In these barns, they will have protection from the cold and supplemental light so that they will continue to lay eggs during the winter.  Barn doors are open during the day as long as weather permits so that the hens can range into the paddocks on the sides of the buildings.  We have about 20 new baby pigs and more baby rabbits than that.  Fall lambing has ended and some of the Spring calves will be weaned soon.  

People think that things slow down in the winter on the farm.  Not on ours.  There is always lots to be done.  Equipment that needs to be worked on, meat to be processed, orders to be filled and delivered, animals that need to be tended too and lots of hauling of hay and even water when the weather gets really bad.  Once you have spent 8 hours a day just hauling hay and water to animals in icy weather, snow and ice aren't nearly as appealing.

September 2015 Farm Specials

Farm News:  Now is the time to order your Thanksgiving turkey.  Whole Turkeys are $6.00/lb and you can reserve yours with a $25.00 deposit.  Don't wait too late as supplies are limited and orders are coming in daily.  These are Bronze turkeys and are raised on pasture moving in paddocks behind the cows and sheep.

Meanwhile, we half of our ewes in groups with the rams breeding for late Winter lambing.  The ewes that are bred to lamb in the fall are getting larger every day and a few have udders beginning to fill up with milk.  "HAY" is the word of the month.  We are cutting, drying and baling whenever there is a sunny and dry weather streak and when the equipment cooperates.  Alena's boyfriend is working with Daddy Jeff and learning from him.  They have had to replace a bearing in the hay baler this past week and are currently have the big International 966 tractor torn down to rebuild the clutch.

Finally, we are working on the butcher shop and deli "Whiskey Pig Craft Butchery" which we hope to open in Kinston in November.  When this gets up and running, we will have lots of new items available with a focus on gourmet sausages and charcuterie.  So, keep a watch out to our Facebook page for the latest updates.

July/August 2015 Farm Specials

Farm News:  The rabbits are proving how prolific they are as we have processed almost 100 rabbits over the last month.  If you have never eaten rabbit, it is a very tender and lean meat.  You can substitute rabbit in almost any recipe that calls for chicken.  The only thing is that because there is no skin on the packaged rabbits, if you are going to grill, you should either marinate and grill on indirect heat or wrap in bacon to add fat.  We have also been processing chickens every week, and the Contentnea Reds are finishing with a 3.50 to 4 lb carcass, perfect for the grill or smoker or cutting up to fry.  It is time for the Thanksgiving turkey poults to arrive and we will start taking reservations.  We just had 21 new baby pigs born last week with more on the way.  The grass is holding up pretty well considering how dry this season has been.  We had a good shower come through today and we are praying for regular rainfall as we desperately need to get some hay put up for winter.  Finally, we have a big announcement coming and we are going to play a little guessing game with it.  If you the first to guess correctly, then you can win a prize.  So, stay tuned to our Facebook page for details!

May/June 2015 Farm Specials

We are in the transition between Spring and Summer on the farm.  We are harvesting the cool season grasses and putting up hay, weaning lambs and planting summer grazing.  Poultry are being harvested every week as well as batches of rabbits.  Lamb, Pork and Beef are being processed 1-2 times per month.  For military families, we are now at the Camp Lejeune Farmer's Market on Tuesdays from 10-2pm.  We also make monthly home deliveries along the coast Havelock to Beaufort to Wilmington (and points in-between).  We are also making deliveries to the OBX as often as orders necessitate.  If you live near Rocky Mount, Greenville, Goldsboro, Wilson, etc. just let us know and we will be glad to make a home delivery to you.  We are in those towns weekly.  The other markets that we participate in are the New Bern Farmer's Market (2 Saturdays per month) and the State Farmer's Market in Raleigh (every day but Tuesday).  Tell a friend and if they order and mention your name, you will get a free item.  Also, the best way to keep up with what we are doing is on FACEBOOK (Rainbow Meadow Farms).  We post lots of photos there and special information.  We also do drawings for Gift Certificates.  So, like us on Facebook and share with your friends.   You may win a Gift Certificate.
